All Dallas recreation centers will be closed on Friday, Aug. 7, as municipal workers take required unpaid furlough days to help close a $30 million city budget gap.
According to a press release from the Dallas Park and Recreation Department, the single-day closure was strategically delayed until late summer. City officials rescheduled the department's furlough requirement to August to keep recreation facilities fully open during the peak summer rush, when community demand for youth programming and heat-relief centers is highest.
While all city recreation centers will shut down throughout Friday, department officials confirmed that municipal aquatic facilities, administrative offices, and park maintenance operations will remain open and operate on their standard schedules. All recreation centers are scheduled to resume normal operations on Saturday.
The temporary closures are part of a broader cost-reduction plan initiated by Dallas City Manager Kim Tolbert to address a multi-million-dollar deficit in the city's 2026 general fund. According to city financial reports, the shortfall stems primarily from lower-than-projected sales tax collections, higher-than-expected overtime expenses, and increased employee healthcare claims.
To curb municipal spending without resorting to job cuts, city leadership mandated that non-uniformed General Fund employees take three unpaid furlough days before the end of September. Essential public safety agencies—including the Dallas Police Department, Dallas Fire-Rescue, 911 dispatch, and sanitation operations—are fully exempt from the furlough schedule and remain operational.
KERA News reports that recreation department employees affected by Friday’s closure are prohibited from using accrued paid leave to supplement their pay loss. No safety incidents, injuries, or disruptions to emergency services are tied to the scheduled facility closures.
