DALLAS (1080 KRLD)- Dallas County Health and Human Services reported 268 additional COVID-19 cases Thursday and six additional deaths. Among the deaths was a person who had received both doses of the vaccine.

"One of those deaths is a COVID vaccine breakthrough case. The person was on immunosuppressant medication and vaccine efficacy is significantly degraded in this population," Judge Clay Jenkins wrote in a statement.

Jenkins says the vaccine remains the most important tool "to protect yourself and your community from COVID." He says the rate of vaccination in North Texas has fallen behind other metro areas.

"Need a gift for Mother’s Day? Give Mom the peace of mind of knowing that you are vaccinated and protected and have done your patriotic part to end the COVID-19 pandemic," he says.

Over the past 30 days, Dallas County has recorded 1,065 cases of COVID-19 among students and school staff at 381 schools across the county.

In Dallas County, the vaccine is available without an appointment at Dallas College's Eastfield Campus, Ellis Davis Field House, Fair Park and the Potter's House.
