Dallas rescinds police 911 call center memo after firestorm of criticism

DALLAS (1080 KRLD)- The city of Dallas is withdrawing a police 911 call center memo that has flared up into a big controversy.

The memo circulated among 911 staffers explaining a proposal to improve police response times to emergencies by eliminating responses to Priority 4 calls that are not emergencies -- car burglaries, graffiti, loud music, lost property -- that sort of thing.

The memo says Priority 4s could be diverted to an on-line reporting system. But no sooner did the memo get leaked than the uproar erupted. The Governor heard about and responded, saying "...we will restore law and order in Texas." The mayor said he had not heard about until the memo was leaked -- many city council members say the same.

With this blowing up, the city quickly rescinded the memo, saying it was premature to release it right now since the proposal is still under evaluation.
