A new ordinance taking effect this week will expand Dallas’ smoking restrictions to include electronic smoking devices, effectively banning vaping everywhere smoking is already prohibited.
The amendment to the Dallas City Code, which takes effect Dec. 11, updates the city’s definition of “smoking” to include vaping. City officials said the change follows a one-year grace period adopted last year to allow residents and businesses time to comply.
The new rules do not add any additional locations to the city’s current smoking restrictions. Vaping will now be prohibited in all indoor and enclosed public spaces, within 15 feet of building entrances and on park property — mirroring the city’s existing smoking ban.
Businesses such as restaurants, hotels and fitness centers must update posted signs to reflect that both smoking and electronic smoking device use are not allowed.
The Dallas City Council approved the ordinance in December 2024.
