The office responsible for issuing building permits in Dallas is still working to resolve a significant backlog.
The wait time for getting a permit to build a single-family home in Dallas went up significantly during the COVID-19 pandemic. While officials say they have reduced the waiting time, they also say it could be several more months before they reach their goals for getting those permits issued in a timely manner.
"My ultimate goal is to be able to issue new single-family residential permits within three to five days," said Andrew Espinosa with the city's Development Services office. "That is the ultimate goal." Right now the wait time for that type of permit is 32 days.
"The biggest Achilles heel for our department is software. Staff have to work between two and three software databases. It does not communicate effectively with staff or the customer, and so I look forward to our new permitting software system," Espinosa said.
A resolution to the problem could still be several months away.
"I suspect that we will see an improvement in this turnaround time this winter or early spring of next year," he said.
