Dallas is loosening restrictions on those increasingly popular food trucks, hoping to make it easier for entrepreneurs to get their food businesses going.

On Wednesday, the city council unanimously approved a new ordinance that cuts small business fees, allows other types of vehicles to serve food, and expands prep options. Several chefs and restaurant owners voiced support for the loosened restrictions during the meeting, including chef and food truck owner Jasin Boso:

"I've been involved in the food truck community for eight years now, and have seen the troubles these guys have gone through," Boso said. "This [ordinance] opens up this entrepreneurial business for diversity, for underprivileged communities. And that is going to benefit our city so greatly."

City leaders are also considering a pilot program that would create “Food Truck Zones” in certain areas across Dallas. The ultimate goal is to increase the number of mobile restaurants across the city.

“Dallas is a great food city. But for too long, the city government has been far too restrictive to mobile food operators," said Dallas Mayor Eric Johnson. "Together, we are working to make Dallas more vibrant and more fun.”
