There's a new baby hippopotamus at the Dallas Zoo. The calf was born on Sunday, October 30th around 5:30pm.
Officials at the zoo say both the mother and baby are doing well, but they will be kept away from the main habitat and viewing area for a few weeks.
The animal team at the zoo knew the female, named Boipelo, was pregnant and had been monitoring her condition closely. They noticed signs of labor mid-afternoon and used surveillance cameras to track the baby's delivery.
They say the calf came up for air immediately after being delivered in a pond and was swimming shortly after that. The calf was nursing within an hour and spent the night with its mother.
The zoo has not decided on a name for the baby hippo just yet. Officials say it could be several more weeks before they make their debut in the main habitat area.
