Darius Fields, 31, took the stand during the sentencing phase of his trial Wednesday, testifying on his own behalf against the advice of his attorneys, according to NBCDFW.com
"I could never imagine in my wildest dreams that something like this would ever transpire behind marijuana," Fields told the jury.
The sentence caps off nearly a week of testimony, built largely on circumstantial evidence, that Fields masterminded the kidnapping and murder of 13-year old Shavon Randle.
Prosecutors said it was all over a drug theft that Randle had nothing to do with. Fields denied any involvement in the kidnapping, which sparked an Amber Alert that ended when a co-conspirator led police to her body in an abandoned Oak Cliff drug house in July 2017. The body of Michael Titus, part of Fields' drug crew was there too.
Fields is already serving an 18-year prison term for a firearm charge related to the killing.
