Dallas Area Rapid Transit has received more than $7 million in new federal funding to help replace aging buses as part of a sweeping fleet overhaul.
The Federal Transit Administration awarded DART $7.094 million as one of 165 transit projects selected nationwide. The agency plans to use the money to help purchase nearly 500 new buses under its $2.5 billion, 10-year modernization program.
DART already bought 476 buses earlier this year, and the rollout of upgraded vehicles is expected to continue through 2027. Some of the new buses could begin entering service as soon as this month.
The latest grant adds to the $103 million in federal funding DART has already secured for the project. The agency says the federal support will help lower costs for DART and its member cities.
