Deep Ellum is currently celebrating its 150th anniversary, and the neighborhood has a lot more to celebrate now as it was officially added to the National Register of Historic Places!
Stephanie Keller Hudiburg, executive director of the Deep Ellum Foundation, said, "We've been working on this since 2020, so this is incredibly exciting for us, especially for our 150th year. Really for us, it's a jumping-off point to more celebrations."
Per the Dallas Morning News, an official ceremony will occur sometime in September. An exact date isn't known, but it will involve a ribbon-cutting, along with the installation of a plaque in front of the Kimpton Pittman Hotel, housed in the former Knights of Pythias Temple, on Elm Street.
The Texas Historical Commission said Deep Ellum was listed because of "its associations with Dallas commerce and for its rich and diverse social history."
The National Register of Historic Places supports public and private efforts to identify, evaluate and protect the nation's historic and archeological resources. It includes 3,400 listings in Texas.
