Prosecutors and defense attorneys remained tight-lipped Monday after a court hearing in a case that has drawn a strong reaction from the community, Collin County District Attorney Greg Willis says.
Willis acknowledged the murder of 17-year-old Austin Metcalf has struck a nerve locally, but emphasized the need for a fair trial.
"It's hard for everybody to be level-headed at a time like this, so that's where we come in," Willis said. "It's our job to be level-headed, to be fact-based, and to follow the truth wherever it leads."
During the bond reduction hearing for Karmelo Anthony, prosecutors raised questions about why Anthony brought a knife to a recent track meet — an issue that could play a role in the case moving forward. Defense attorney Michael Howard did not comment directly on the allegation during proceedings.
"That's an understandable question," he said. "But it's not something that frankly we're prepared to even go into and we ask that the public – as hard as it is – withhold judgment."
Willis said the district attorney's office will wait for Frisco police to conclude their investigation before determining the next steps or proceeding to trial.
