Former Congressman Colin Allred says he plans to run for U.S. Senate in 2026. The Democrat from Dallas announced his campaign in a video Tuesday morning.
John Cornyn is running for a fifth term as U.S. Senator. Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton us running against him in the Republican primary.
In the video posted Tuesday, Allred said he has not taken money from political action committees, naming both Cornyn and Paxton as "too corrupt to care about us and too weak to fight for us."
Allred won the Democratic nomination for U.S. Senate in 2024, losing to Ted Cruz 53 to 45 percent. At the top of the ticket, Kamala Harris lost to Donald Trump in Texas 56 to 43 percent.
Two other Democrats have launched campaigns for U.S. Senate in 2026.
Terry Virts, a retired astronaut, announced his campaign in June. In a video launching the campaign, he said the Democratic Party needed new ideas.
“After every mission, we debrief, no excuses, just the truth. After the 2024 election disaster, Washington Democratic leadership skipped the debrief," Virts said.
Mike Swanson, a former flight attendant, is also running for the Democratic nomination.
"Mike is looking to take the lessons and knowledge from his previous challenges, and take the fight to Congress to make a change from ineffectual actions, to revitalization," he wrote on his website.
Tuesday morning, Cornyn's campaign released three digital ads for his campaign in the Republican primary.
“Ken Paxton’s tenure as Attorney General of Texas has been filled with dysfunction, internal dissention and leadership failures and these three videos identify three specific examples of how Ken Paxton has failed Texas. In one unbelievable instance, Ken Paxton approved grants to American Gateways EVEN AFTER his office announced it would investigate them. Ken Paxton needs to admit these grants should not have been approved, take responsibility for his leadership failure and mismanagement, and apologize to Texas taxpayers," Cornyn campaign senior adviser Matt Mackowiak wrote in a statement.
