Democrats are pouring significant resources into Texas, with the U.S. Senate race between incumbent Republican Sen. Ted Cruz and Democrat Colin Allred shaping up to be one of the most expensive elections in the state's history.
Even if Democrats fall short, they may view their financial investment in Texas as laying the groundwork for future races.
"If they come close against Cruz that will build on their prospects down the road," SMU political science professor Cal Jillson said.
The Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee said in a statement that it is "going on offense" in the state. Recent polls show Cruz maintaining a lead, though the gap between the two candidates has narrowed.
