The Denton City Council will vote on a resolution this evening showing support for individual reproductive rights. It's a response to last week's decision by the U.S. Supreme Court to eliminate the constitutional right to an abortion.
The resolution will not override Texas laws designed to make abortion illegal. It will instruct the city staff and Denton Police Department that investigating reports about violations of those laws will be the city's lowest priority.
"We feel confident that the City Council wants to protect abortion in Denton," the Council Members supporting the resolution wrote in a statement posted on-line. Their statement notes that if the resolution passes, "the city will not produce or save any information pertaining to alleged abortion crimes," which would make it difficult for prosecutors to build a case.
The resolution is similar to one being proposed by members of the Austin City Council. Several Council Members there are supporting a resolution they're calling the GRACE Act, which stands for "Guarding the Right to Abortion Care for Everyone".
