Denton County will get a big boost to its supply of COVID-19 vaccine doses soon. County officials say the Texas Department of State Health Services has allocated 31,500 doses to the county for distribution next week.

"This is welcome news," said Denton County Judge Andy Eads. County officials had been pushing for an increase in their allotment from the state, saying the amount they were receiving did not meet the need based on the county's population.

"In the initial allocations, Denton County received lower amounts," Judge Eads said. "I think this is the state catching up."

Last week, Denton County received 6,000 doses. This week's allocation was 9,500 doses.

For next week's shipment, the county will receive 19,500 doses of the Pfizer vaccine and 12,000 doses of the Moderna vaccine. County officials are also expecting additional doses for the second shots for people who have already received their first shot.

Denton County Public Health is operating a vaccine distribution hub. Appointments are required for vaccination clinics. People who have registered through Denton County's Vaccine Interest Portal will receive texts and emails with appointment information several days prior to each clinic.
