Denton Police say a 31-year-old man has been charged with murder for selling someone fentanyl that resulted in his death. A Texas law that took effect last year allows police and prosecutors to pursue murder charges in fentanyl overdose cases.
Police found the body of 26-year-old Dylan King in south Denton on January 21st. The medical examiner determined he died from an overdose of cocaine and fentanyl.
Investigators learned he had purchased cocaine laced with fentanyl from his co-worker, 31-year-old Pedro Martinez. They questioned Martinez while he was in the Denton County Jail on other charges. They say he admitted to selling the drugs to King.
Under the new state law on fentanyl overdoses, they obtained a warrant for Martinez on a charge of murder. He's in the Denton County Jail.
Denton Police say this is the fifth fentanyl-related murder charge they have pursued since the law took effect on September 1st of 2023.
