Denton voters will get to decide on whether to decriminalize the use of marijuana.

On Tuesday night the Denton City Council agreed to put the issue on the November ballot.

At a public hearing, citizens along with UNT students urged the council to put it up for a public vote because many college students make marijuana part of their life-style.

Other speakers supporting the public vote pointed out that some veterans use cannabis for pain control and for PTSD management.

The proposed ordinance seeks to eliminate all citations and arrests for possession of misdemeanor amounts of marijuana and paraphernalia, and it would also prevent Denton police from stopping and frisking people because they may smell marijuana.
