Police were notified by Child Protective Services last week about a boy being treated at a hospital for severe head injuries. Investigators questioned 57-year-old Angela Downing, the boy's grandmother and legal guardian.

"We were informed that the grandmother had reported to medical staff that the child had fallen down a flight of stairs accidentally," said Denton Police Officer Allison Beckwith.

However, that story did not hold up under scrutiny.

"During an interview with detectives, the suspect admitted to forcefully throwing the child against a wall and on a bathroom floor," Officer Beckwith said.

The boy died from his injuries over the weekend. Downing was arrested on Monday. She has been charged with murder.

"This is a grandmother and a grandchild. That's not a case we see very often," said Officer Beckwith. "It is a tragic reminder of how devastating child abuse can be. If you suspect or know of anyone who is being abused - we encourage people to call the Children's Advocacy Center or the police department...anybody that they can call for help."
