Actor Denzel Washington isn’t holding back about his frustration with the Dallas Cowboys. A lifelong fan, Washington used a national platform on ESPN’s “First Take” to accuse team owner Jerry Jones of focusing more on making money than winning championships.

The comments struck a nerve with fans, as the Cowboys enter their 29th season since last hoisting the Lombardi Trophy.

The last time Dallas won the Super Bowl was January 28, 1996, when they beat the Pittsburgh Steelers in Super Bowl XXX.

Back then, pop culture looked a little different. Friends and Seinfeld were the kings of network television. “One Sweet Day” by Mariah Carey and Boyz II Men was in the middle of a record-setting 16-week run at the top of the Billboard Hot 100. Toy Story - the first-ever fully computer-animated movie - was still packing theaters, and most people were just starting to explore the internet on slow, screeching dial-up connections. Gas averaged about $1.15 a gallon, and you could buy a new car for around $16,000.

Washington’s comments tap into a sentiment many Cowboys fans share - a longing to return to the glory days of the 1990s, and growing impatience with the drought that’s followed.
