The US Department of Education is launching an investigation into the policy by Texas Governor Greg Abbott that bans mask mandates in schools.

The State of Texas has tried to prevent schools from adopting their own local mask mandates to limit the spread of COVID-19. But the US Department of Education's Office of Civil Rights says that could block school districts from meeting the needs of students with disabilities, who could be at increased risk of severe illness from the coronavirus.
The feds have sent a letter to the Texas Commissioner of Education announcing the investigation.
The Department of Education launched similar investigations into policies in five other states last month.
