DESOTO (1080 KRLD)- The DeSoto ISD canceled classes district-wide for Friday, March 11th after a fight at DeSoto West Middle School.

The altercation involved a student and a teacher. Portions of the incident were captured on video and clips have been circulating on social media. The DeSoto Police Department is investigating the case.

Teachers will report to work Friday. District officials say they'll be working on ways to improve campus safety along with the district's "climate and culture". They will also review the district's enforcement procedures for disciplinary measures, attendance, dress code violations and general behavior.

Students were already scheduled to be off next week for spring break. They'll return to class on Monday, March 21st. The DeSoto ISD says at that time, employees' duty assignments will be adjusted so that there will always be staff in all hallways and common areas of each building to monitor traffic and activity. The DeSoto ISD will also ban students from using cell phones, earbuds and headphones during the school day.

District officials say their calendar does have room for the extra day off Friday.
