Difference Makers help their children build a foundation for success

A North Texas couple addressed their son's struggle with reading and ended up creating a program that’s helping dozens of kids build a strong foundation for future success. They're this week’s KRLD Difference Makers.

When John Ewing's son had problems reading, John and his wife, came up with a plan.

“My son was 9 years old and he was struggling reader. My wife and I came up with a plan that he was going to write his own book,” John said. “It worked.”

The Ewing’s invested $100 into a lemonade stand for their son and gave him the basics on how to start his business, as he’d later be self-publishing his book. In a month, he’d made $3000. Ewing says his son self-published his book and he’s not a 4.0 student.

John says more than the actual lessons of learning and entrepreneurship, there is one fundamental skill that opens a lot of doors for children.

“I think its important to build self-confidence in our children,” John said. “That’s one thing we wanted him to know. That he could do anything he puts his mind to. By him working that lemonade stand alone, I think that built his confidence and now he knows he can do anything.”

Now they're helping other kids do the same with their non-profit Young Legacy Builders, offering free online classes for kids 9-18 years old on entrepreneurship, stocks, cryptocurrency, and more.

For John, helping and serving others was an integral part of his upbringing.

We're proud to call Young Legacy Builders this week's KRLD Difference Makers.
