A driver is dead after being shot in a shopping center parking lot and crashing his pickup truck into Fishtrap Lake in West Dallas late Tuesday night.
According to the Dallas Police Department, officers responded to multiple 911 calls around 11:30 p.m. reporting a submerged vehicle in Fishtrap Lake, located along Singleton Boulevard near North Hampton Road. Responding officers immediately entered the water to attempt a rescue of the unresponsive driver.
As first responders worked to revive the man, they discovered he had suffered a gunshot wound. The driver was pronounced dead at the scene. Police have not yet released the victim’s identity, pending notification of next of kin.
A preliminary investigation revealed that the victim met another individual in a nearby parking lot before the encounter escalated into gunfire. CBS News Texas reports that the suspect exited the truck and shot the driver at point-blank range. The wounded driver then attempted to drive away before losing control and careening into the lake.
FOX 4 News reports that homicide detectives are actively searching for a shooter and working to determine a motive. As of Wednesday, no arrests have been made and no suspect descriptions have been released by law enforcement.
Dallas police are appealing to the public for assistance and asking anyone with information regarding the shooting or events leading up to the crash to contact the department immediately. No additional injuries were reported.
