The new Yellowstone spinoff Dutton Ranch turned into a real-life snake story during its eight-month shoot across North Texas, with cast and crew encountering thousands of rattlesnakes on set.
Cole Hauser, who reprises his role as Rip Wheeler, revealed on The Kelly Clarkson Show that professional snake wranglers caught and relocated 3,400 rattlesnakes while filming the Paramount+ series. Production took place primarily in Ferris, about 20 miles south of Dallas, with additional shoots in Fort Worth, Dallas, Weatherford, Mineral Wells, Boyd, Cleburne, and Rio Vista. One night shoot was delayed after director Christina Voros discovered 40 to 50 rattlesnakes at a single location.
The challenges highlight the realities of filming in rural Texas ranch country, where venomous snakes are common. Up to six snake wranglers worked on set at times to keep the cast and crew safe, including stars Kelly Reilly and Hauser. Snakes were captured and moved far from filming areas rather than harmed. No injuries or bites were reported among the production team.
Dutton Ranch continues the Dutton family saga in Texas, blending the neo-Western drama with authentic local settings. The snake encounters have become one of the most talked-about behind-the-scenes stories since Hauser and Reilly shared details from the production.
