This is the first day of early voting for the May 24th runoff election. Several races from the March 1st party primaries in Texas where no candidate got more than 50 percent of the vote are on the ballot.
The highest-profile race is the contest for the Republican Party's nominee for Lieutenant Governor. Incumbent Ken Paxton is facing a primary challenge from Texas Land Commissioner George P. Bush. Democrats are also choosing their candidate for the ballot in that race for the November general election.
Since George P. Bush is not running for re-election as Land Commissioner, that race attracted several candidates in the Republican Party Primary. Tim Westley and David Beckingham advanced to the runoff in the Republican Party, while Democrats are choosing between Jay Kleberg and Sandragrace Martinez.
In the Dallas region, Democrats are choosing a candidate for the 30th Congressional District. Long-time Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson chose not to run for re-election. State Representative Jasmine Crockett is competing with Jane Hope Hamilton for the nomination in the Democratic Party, while Republicans are choosing between James Harris and James Rodgers.
There are also some local races on the ballot.
There's a runoff in Collin County for the Republican Party's nominee for County Clerk. In Denton County, Republicans will decide on their nominee for County Commissioner in Precinct Two. Democrats in Dallas County are choosing between Ann Cruz and John F. Warren for their nominee for District Clerk.
Early voting runs through May 20th. Election day is May 24th.
