There is an effort in Congress to keep SNAP benefits funded through the government shutdown.

Senator John Cornyn has signed onto a bill being pushed by Missouri's Josh Hawley that would appropriate necessary funding to provide uninterrupted SNAP benefits to three and a half million Texans.

"Senate Democrats have voted against funding SNAP and reopening the government more than a dozen times already, forcing vulnerable Texans to go hungry as the holidays are fast approaching," Senator Cornyn said in a statement.

Democrats have been calling on republicans to join them in a conversation to extend Obamacare subsidies that would otherwise send premiums sky high for millions of Americans.

Republicans have pushed for a clean continuing resolution passed by the House that would re-open the government.

Funding for SNAP benefits could run dry as early as this weekend.
