El Paso city leaders are not happy over the FAA shutting down the airspace around El Paso International Airport overnight.

El Paso Mayor Renard Johnson said El Paso is a large city and you simply cannot shut down a major city.

"Our airport was in chaos, our community was scared, all because someone decided to shut down our air space," Mayor Johnson said. "You just cannot do that."

El Paso law enforcement only could say they were aware of the report that this was caused by a drone operated by a nearby drug cartel and they have not been officially notified that was the reason.

Leaders are hopeful that someone from the federal level will tell them exactly what led up to the decision.

Mayor Johnson said the airport has not been closed since the September 11th terror attacks in 2001 and the air space should only be shut down if there is a National Security threat to the community.

"I can tell you El Paso deserves better, we deserve to know why our airport was shut down, it's unacceptable," Mayor Johnson said. "I hope we get that answer."

Meanwhile, the Texas Department of Public Safety says a memo circulating online about road closures in the El Paso area was fake and they are unaware of where that memo originated.
