For the third time in three weeks, a community said farewell to a murdered North Texas law enforcement officer.
The service for Isaiah Bias was held at the Midlothian Conference Center. The 28-year-old was the second eldest of 11 brothers and sisters. The Ellis County Sheriff's Jailer leaves behind family members who include his mother, siblings nieces and nephews.
Police say Isaiah Bias was killed by an inmate while on duty at the Ellis County Jail. In his honor, Governor Abbott has ordered flags to be lowered through Tuesday.
Arron Thompson, 45, was on his one-hour recreational break on the first floor of the facility when 28-year-old officer Bias approached him to take him back to his cell, according to an affidavit.
The affidavit says Thompson hit Bias in the head and started to choke him out. Thompson continued to strike Bias after he was incapacitated, according to the document.
Ellis County Sheriff Brad Norman said Thompson walked back downstairs and waited for Bias to be discovered. Bias was rushed to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Thompson was charged with capital murder and issued a bond of $2 million.
He was in jail on three counts of assault and abating charges since early November.
A public memorial is now set up at Ellis County Sheriff's headquarters and anyone is encouraged to stop by, pay respects or leave any token of appreciation for Officer Bias.
