AUSTIN TX (1080 KRLD)- While there seemed to be plenty of electricity flowing across Texas Thursday morning after Wednesday's 'Level 2 Energy Emergency Alert' expired, ERCOT has issued another conservation request for Thursday evening.
Late Wednesday afternoon, ERCOT issued an Energy Emergency Alert Level Two as reserves dipped under 2500 Megawatts for the first time this year.
ERCOT said energy conservation was critical, otherwise, controlled outages may have been necessary due to very low reserves.
The Level Two alert expired at 9 p.m.
Wednesday, at 4 a.m., ERCOT's dashboard reported operating reserves of power over ten thousand Megawatts. But at 11:15 a.m., ERCOT decided to issue an energy conservation request across the state for Thursday between the hours of 5 p.m. and 9 p.m. They included the following statement:
"Today’s conservation appeal does not indicate ERCOT is experiencing emergency conditions at this time. Current forecasts are showing a potential for low reserves today because of continued high temperatures, high demand, low wind, and declining solar power generation into the afternoon and evening hours. ERCOT will continue to closely monitor conditions throughout the day and will keep the public informed through our communications channels."
ERCOT says they expect similar conditions on Friday and will continue to keep the public informed.
Tips for keeping your home cool include setting your thermostat to 78 degrees, closing blinds and curtains to keep the sun from heating your home, unplugging appliances that aren't in use, and even taking a cold shower.
