A former Dallas Police officer avoids prison time but will lose his law enforcement license after pleading guilty to a charge from the 2020 Black Lives Matter protests.
Former Senior Corporal Melvin Williams has pleaded guilty to a deadly conduct charge, and prosecutors have dismissed another charge. He surrendered his peace officer license and was put on deferred adjudication. Williams was one of three officers indicted for using excessive force during the Dallas George Floyd protests.
He was accused of shooting a foam bullet at a man, costing protester Brandon Saenz his eye. Investigators say there was no need for that to have happened. Two others who were indicted along with Williams, Senior Corporal Ryan Mabry of Dallas and Garland Police Officer Joe Privitt, are still awaiting trial.
