The excessive heat advisories and warnings won't let up in the North Texas area causing concerns over health related illnesses. Health officials have been warning people to stay inside, wear sunscreen and stay hydrated but you might want to add one more precaution to that list.
Dallas County Health's Dr. Philip Huang says refraining from drinking too much alcohol is equally important.
"We're definitely seeing excessive heat and heat related illness in the community, heat stroke, heat exhaustion and even deaths is what we're seeing in the hospitals," said Huang "But one of the things about alcohol is it actually increases risk of dehydration."
Meaning excessive drinking is counter active and avoiding alcohol should be on everyone's radar but especially students heading back to college campuses.
"Try to avoid the heat as much as possible and try to stay hydrated with water, alcohol has negative effects on that," said Huang.
If you are going to drink Huang says for every alcoholic beverage you have you should be accompanying it with 8 to 12 ounces of water.
