Extended unemployment benefits coming to an end in Texas

As Texas adds more jobs, extended unemployment benefits will soon come to an end. The Texas Workforce Commission says the state added 80,900 jobs in July; the unemployment rate dropped from 6.5% to 6.2%.

The unemployment rate dropping below 6.5% triggered an end to an additional 13 weeks of benefits. The federal government was paying half the cost of the extended benefits.

The Texas Workforce Commission says the state has added 714,800 jobs in the past year. The unemployment rate in Texas peaked at 12.8% in April 2020.

In July, the commission says leisure and hospitality added the most jobs in Texas with 20,600, followed by professional and business services with 11,500 jobs and manufacturing with 8,300.

In Dallas/Fort Worth, the Texas Workforce Commission says the unemployment rate was 5.3%, down from 6.0% in June and 8.8% in July of 2020.

Extended unemployment benefits will continue for two more weeks.
