The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has approved VIZZ, a once-daily prescription eye drop designed to improve near vision for adults with presbyopia, potentially reducing reliance on reading glasses for millions of Americans.

LENZ Therapeutics announced the approval of VIZZ (aceclidine ophthalmic solution 1.44%) on July 31, 2025. The medication works by creating a pinhole effect through pupil constriction, sharpening close-up focus within about 30 minutes and lasting up to 10 hours. Clinical trials showed many patients gained three or more lines of near vision with minimal impact on distance vision.

Presbyopia, the age-related loss of near focus that typically begins in the early 40s, affects approximately 128 million adults in the United States. VIZZ is the first and only FDA-approved aceclidine-based drop for this condition, offering a new option alongside existing treatments.

The drops are applied once daily in each eye and are expected to cost around $2 per day. Samples were anticipated as early as October 2025, with broader commercial availability in late 2025. It is available by prescription only.

Trials involving over 1,000 participants demonstrated effectiveness and a favorable safety profile. Common side effects were generally mild and temporary. The company notes it is not suitable for everyone, and patients should consult their eye care provider.

This approval represents another step in pharmacologic treatments for presbyopia, giving patients more choices beyond glasses, contacts or surgery.
