A Fort Worth family is asking prosecutors to drop a manslaughter charge filed against a 24-year-old man accused of driving around lowered railroad crossing arms before being struck by a Trinity Railway Express train, killing his 5-year-old nephew.
Police say the crash happened earlier this week near Elliott Reeder Road and Colony Court, where the child was riding in the vehicle as it crossed the tracks.
According to investigators, the crossing gates and warning signals were down when the driver attempted to go around them, and the train struck the vehicle moments later. The child died at the scene, and the driver was later arrested on a manslaughter charge tied to the incident.
Family members of the boy say they are now urging authorities to drop the charge, though prosecutors have not announced any changes to the case. The investigation remains active as officials continue reviewing evidence from the crash.
