The father of freed American Trevor Reed has spoken out against Texas Senator Ted Cruz.
Joey Reed told the Dallas Morning News Cruz "didn’t do anything" to try and get Trevor released, adding: "he's an embarrassment to the state of Texas".
Reed, who is from Granbury, said he will now campaign to defeat Cruz.
"I don’t care what or who runs against him, I will work for their campaign to defeat that son of a bit**," Reed told the DMN.
Trevor Reed, a former Marine, was released last month as part of a prisoner swap after he had been held in Russia for nearly three years.
Joey Reed praised Senator John Cornyn and Texas Congressmen August Pfluger and Michael McCaul for all they did to help free Trevor. Cruz's office said he opted against publicizing his stance on the matter to avoid provoking Vladimir Putin. According to aides, this does not mean Cruz was not working outside of the public's view on Trevor's release.
