Despite the feelings of the victim's family, an FBI review shows Denton police committed no civil rights violations the night UNT student Darius Tarver was killed.
Denton Police Chief Frank Dixon stresses that the Bureau's decision "in no way minimizes the tragic loss of life."
Last year, Tarver was shot and killed by a Denton officer after police were called to an apartment complex where residents said Tarver was banging on doors and smashing light fixtures.
Body cam footage shows officers were confronted by Tarver holding a meat cleaver and a frying pan. He ignored orders to drop the weapons and slashed one officer with the cleaver.
After being tazed twice, Tarver kept on coming until an officer shot him once. He fell but got back up again and continued to advance. The same officer shot him twice more, ending the threat.
A grand jury declined to indict the officer but Tarver's family was dissatisfied. So, Dixon asked the FBI for an independent review.
