The Dallas office of the FBI is warning Texas universities about the threat of
intellectual property theft by the Chinese government.
About 100 administrators and faculty members from universities across the state attended a meeting with FBI officials in Dallas. They were told that the Chinese Communist Party is trying to replace the U.S. as the world’s top global power, and that visiting scholars often transfer original work from universities to Chinese authorities.
Recently retired Dallas FBI Agent in Charge Matthew DeSarno described a case at the University of North Texas in which the university suspended hosting 15 scholars funded by the Chinese Scholarship Council because they were found to be sending UNT research back to Beijing.
