Federal prosecutors are wrap up their case against a massive healthcare fraud operation in north Texas.
Prosecutors say the CEO of a hospice agency in Dallas led the scheme to defraud Medicare of $27 million.
In all, 13 defendants associated with Novus Health Services and Optimum Health Services either pled guilty or were convicted on fraud, conspiracy and other charges. They recieved a combined 84 years in prison.
Bradley J. Harris, the 39-year-old former head of Novus and Optimum Health Services, pleaded guilty last March to conspiracy to commit healthcare fraud and healthcare fraud. He was sentenced today by Chief U.S. District Judge Barbara M.G. Lynn, who ordered him to pay $27,594,875.52 in restitution.
Prosecutors say the company paid kick-backs to doctors to enroll first-time hospice patients to get around Medicare regulations and that officials with the company who were not doctors made decisions about medications and patient treatment - without consulting with any medical professionals.
