The federal government is withdrawing support for a proposed high-speed rail line between Dallas and Houston, U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy announced Monday.

The decision terminates an agreement between the Federal Railroad Administration and Amtrak, which had previously awarded a grant to help Texas Central Railway plan a bullet train route connecting the state's two largest cities.

Duffy called the Texas high-speed rail project a waste of taxpayer funds and said it distracts from Amtrak's core mission. He added that if the private sector believes the project is viable, it should take on the responsibility of continuing the pre-construction work without federal assistance.
