Rockwall ISD says a holstered firearm was accidentally left unattended for about two minutes inside a boys’ restroom at the Rockwall-Heath Indoor Athletic Facility on Monday morning.
The district reports that middle school students from Cain Middle School’s boys’ gymnastics program discovered the weapon while attending class at the facility, which sits in a separate building away from the main high school campus.
According to Rockwall ISD, the firearm belonged to a Heath Department of Public Safety officer and had been inadvertently left behind before the students entered the restroom. The students did not touch or approach the weapon and immediately notified their coach, who secured the firearm. District officials say no high school students were present and that at no point did a student handle the gun.
The Heath Department of Public Safety is now conducting an internal investigation into the incident. Rockwall ISD says the students acted responsibly and that maintaining a safe environment across all facilities remains its top priority.
