Firefighters are urging caution as people do everything they can to stay warm over the weekend.
One of the most dangerous heating sources if used incorrectly involves space heaters.
James Dugger with the Garland Fire Department says not to plug space heaters into power cords.
"Plug them directly into the wall," Dugger said. "Don't use a power surge protector strip.
On top of that, do not use ovens or gas stoves as sources to heat your home.
"Anytime you're using a cooking appliance it should be attended," Dugger said. "When you're using it as a heating source, they're not."
Appliances should only be used for cooking and should never be left unattended.
