Gerard Hudspeth is set to become the City of Denton’s first black mayor.

Hudspeth is a Denton native and two-term city council member. He beat out city council member Keely Briggs in yesterday’s runoff election with 53 percent of the vote.

Hudspeth is set to be sworn in on Dec. 17 with other new council members and will serve a two-year term.

And a similar story in Mansfield, where voters elected a black mayor for the first time in the city’s 130-year history. Dr. Michael Evans, Sr. took the mayoral race with more than 52 percent of the vote, winning over city council member Brent Newsom.

Evans is a senior pastor at Bethlehem Baptist Church, the oldest African-American church in Tarrant County.

In Keller, 33-year-old Armin Mizani won the race for mayor with 59 percent of the vote, beating opponent Tag Green.

In White Settlement, incumbent Ronald White won re-election with 54 percent of the vote.
