First immigrant teenagers arrive at KBH Convention Center

FEMA now says the first group of 200 teenage boys who were detained at the Texas border after illegally crossing into the U.S. has arrived at the Kay Bailey Hutchison Convention Center in Dallas.

The teens are among 3,000 who are expected to be temporarily sheltered in Dallas.  The busses carrying the youths arrived overnight.

Local efforts to help the children are being led by Catholic Charities of Dallas which will try to find relatives and also contact lawyers for representation. From Dallas the teens are expected to be placed with family members.

A team of lawyers is being assembled to help with any legal questions.

"There's going to be a vetting process to make sure there's not just any attorney, but someone who actually knows what they're doing," said Nathan Christensen, a Carrollton immigration attorney.  "The American Immigration Lawyers Association has a chapter out here."

Officials say the Convention Center is a far better facility than the temporary tent detaining camps that have been set up closer to the border.
