Flint Township, Michigan parents face second-degree murder and child abuse charges after their 7-year-old son, who weighed 255 pounds at the time of his death, succumbed to heart failure linked to morbid obesity.
Genesee County Prosecutor David Leyton announced the charges Wednesday against Damien O’Brien, 40, and his wife Jessica O’Brien, 41, in connection with the death of their son Casper. The boy stood 4-foot-2 and died November 4, 2025, after being rushed to Hurley Medical Center in Flint.
According to prosecutors, the cause of death was dilated cardiomyopathy with morbid obesity as a contributing factor. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention lists a healthy weight range for a boy of Casper’s height at approximately 50 to 73 pounds. Investigators said the child had not seen a pediatrician regularly and the family home showed signs of neglect, including hoarding conditions.
The O’Briens also have a 5-year-old daughter. Authorities noted that neither child had been enrolled in school or come to the attention of child protective services prior to the incident. The family had health insurance and the father held steady employment, according to court statements.
Leyton described the case as involving “cruel and extreme suffering” caused by parental neglect. The couple was arrested and is being held without bond in the Genesee County Jail. They are scheduled to appear in court July 2.
The tragedy has drawn attention in the Flint area, where community organizations continue efforts to address child welfare and health issues following the city’s water crisis. No other injuries or fatalities were reported in the case.
This incident underscores the critical role of pediatric care and family support systems in preventing extreme cases of childhood obesity and neglect.
