The former principal of Colleyville Heritage High School who was forced out by the school board almost two years ago begins this school year in a new role.
Dr. James Whitfield took to social media Tuesday to announce that he's the new superintendent of Treetops School International, a K-12 charter school in Euless.
Whitfield's first day was Wednesday, which coincided with the first day of school for students.
He was out bright and early Wednesday, greeting everyone at the dropoff line, and introducing himself to the kids and their parents.
"It's been since November of 2021 since I've been in a school leadership position," Whitfield said in a video he posted to social media, "and this will be my first time being in the role of superintendent."
Whitfield's first day also comes on the day that his resignation from the Grapevine-Colleyville ISD officially took effect.
Whitfield was forced from his role as principal of Colleyville Heritage High School early in the 2021-22 school year over accusations of teaching critical race theory, although principals have no teaching duties.
As part of the settlement, he had been on paid administrative leave ever since. That ended Tuesday.
According to meeting minutes, Whitfield was named the sole finalist for superintendent in March, taking over for his predecessor who had retired.
