About two dozen people displaced by the devastating Maui wildfires are getting help from former Dallas Mavericks Hall of Fame coach and General Manager Don Nelson.

Now retired, Nelson and his wife Joy make their full-time home on Maui and also own some short term rental properties. Nelson says those STRs can house about 24 people and he's opening the door at no charge to the people of Lahaina, the town that took a direct hit from the fires.

The Nelson's permanent home is about 24 miles from Lahaina and they know the community well. Nelson tells reporters "this is home. And right now, it needs all our help."

The Nelsons have a farm on the island to grow flowers, coffee, and cannabis which is legal for medical use in Hawaii. He likes to host poker games with celebrity neighbors like Willie Nelson, Woody Harrelson, and Owen Wilson.

Nelson coached the Mavs from 1997 to 2005 and also served as the General Manager of the team. In 2012, he was inducted into the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame.
