Roach joined the Fort Worth-based Tandy in 1967 and worked his way up to the top job in 1983.

Colleagues remember Roach as one of the driving forces leading to the ground-breaking TRS-80 micro-computer sold through Tandy's Radio Shack outlets.

In 1990, Roach was elected to the TCU Board of Trustees and served for 15 years. In a tweet, TCU says "we mourn the loss of John V. Roach. He will be remembered for his decades of leadership and generosity to TCU, his devotion to our students and for the deep love that he had for his alma mater. We pray for peace for the Roach family."

Forty years ago, Roach approached the Star-Telegram about initiating an o-line news service and in May of 1982, the Star-Telegram became the second newspaper in the country with an online presence.
