The FBI Hostage Rescue Team safely rescued a hostage and took a suspect into custody around 12:30 a.m. Wednesday, ending a nearly 26-hour standoff in the Providence Village neighborhood near Aubrey.

The incident began shortly before midnight Monday on the 12100 block of Thoroughbred Drive when a man called 911 claiming he was holding two females hostage and was armed. Aubrey police responded immediately and activated their Special Operations Response Team. One juvenile female was safely released from the home early Tuesday morning and provided officers with critical information that led to additional resources, including the Denton Police SWAT team and the FBI.

Negotiations continued throughout Tuesday with support from the McKinney Police Department’s hostage negotiation team. By late Tuesday evening, command of the SWAT operation had transferred to the FBI Hostage Rescue Team. No injuries or fatalities were reported during the operation.

The suspect was transported to the Denton County Sheriff’s Office jail, where he was booked on a charge of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. The adult female hostage was evaluated on scene by fire department personnel and transported to a hospital for further checks.

Aubrey police lifted the shelter-in-place order for nearby residents shortly after the resolution, allowing people to return to their homes. The Aubrey Police Department’s Criminal Investigation Division is now executing a search warrant at the residence, and law enforcement activity is expected to continue into the early morning hours.

The standoff affected a residential area in Providence Village, a community in eastern Denton County about 12 miles east of Denton. Local schools issued excused absences for impacted students Tuesday as a precaution.
