Fort Worth cardiologist, NY Yankees great Bobby Brown dies at age 96

He won championships on the baseball field, and saved lives as a North Texas cardiologist. Dr. Bobby Brown has died in Fort Worth.

After helping the New York Yankees to four World Series titles, Brown later served as interim president of the Texas Rangers and spent a decade as president of the American League from 1974-84.  In 1954, he retired from playing baseball at 29 to open his cardiology practice in Fort Worth.

Overshadowed by iconic Yankee teammates including Joe DiMaggio, Mickey Mantle, Whitey Ford and Yogi Berra, Brown was a stellar postseason performer, batting .439 in 17 World Series games.  He was the last surviving member of the franchise's world championship teams of 1947, 1949 and 1950.

In a statement, Major League Baseball said Dr. Brown had been in hospice care.  He passed away today in Fort Worth from natural causes at age 96.
