An outbreak of canine distemper has forced Fort Worth animal shelters to temporarily close as officials work to contain the virus.

City officials announced that shelters will not be accepting new animals after a dog tested positive for distemper last week. Further testing confirmed the virus had spread, leading to the euthanasia of several infected dogs.

Canine distemper is a highly contagious and often fatal disease that affects the respiratory, gastrointestinal, and nervous systems of dogs.

In response, the city has implemented enhanced safety measures at both the North Animal Campus and the Chuck & Brenda Silcox Adoption Center to prevent further spread. There is no timeline yet for when the shelters will reopen.
